When Voting Rights Shrink, Health Inequities Grow
Community News: Call To Action:
When Voting Rights Shrink, Health Inequities Grow.
In late April, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling in Louisiana v. Callais that makes it harder to challenge voting maps that weaken the political power of Black and brown communities. Instead of focusing mainly on whether a map has discriminatory results, the decision raises the bar by emphasizing proof of discriminatory intent, which is much harder to show.
This is not just a democracy issue. It is a health issue. Voting power affects decisions about clinics, hospitals, Medicaid, transportation, housing, and environmental protections—the building blocks of healthy communities. When voting rights are weakened, it becomes harder for communities most affected by inequity to secure the policies and investments they need.
In California and in places like Santa Barbara County and Los Angeles County, where large inequities already exist, this decision is a reminder that we cannot take representation for granted. Protecting civic voice is part of protecting access to care and basic living conditions.
At Project Heal of Santa Barbara County, a community-based organization (CBO) with a Global Health lens, we aspire to create awareness through advocacy, information, and education—not politics. We are expanding health literacy campaigns that explain how voting and health are linked, offering nonpartisan resources on registration and participation, and partnering with local organizations to support community voice.
You can help by staying registered and informed, sharing trusted information with your networks, and supporting efforts that make voting more accessible, especially for Black, Latino, Indigenous, immigrant, and other historically excluded communities.
